Fashion Redemption: Rihanna

First thing's first: I dig the hair. The bright color might look wacky on someone else, but it looks perfect or Ri-ri. And the length is so much softer and more flattering than the semi-mohawk.

But the outfit? A world of no. The world doesn't need to see your bra, Rihanna, especially when it's paired with my jeans from 1993.

Here is a more updated and appropriate look for just $93.50.

The Savvy Stylist: October Brunch Wedding

Reader Request

I am attending a wedding that is in late October, at 11 am, and is on a Sunday. Three big factors are throwing any idea of what would be appropriate out the door for me - fall, brunch, and on a Sunday. It is being held in Florida, and it is indoors for both ceremony and reception. I am 5'8" and around 160 lbs. I need something that can be dressy, but not too dressy since she has not indicated what attire to wear. I am so confused!

This outfit will be perfect for the wedding. The dress is festive, but not too fancy, and it's in the perfect fall palette. The whole look costs $94.40.

5 Under $50: Seychelles Shoes

Seychelles has become my most sought-after brand of shoes. They're quirky, affordable, unique and comfy. Here are five of my favorite pairs.

Fashion Redemption: Julia Roberts

Well, I can see where she was going with this. Angelina Jolie rocked a white suit at the Oscars a while back, and, of course, there's the whole iconic John Travolta Saturday Night Fever look. And I could've forgiven this if Julia's suit was sleek like Angie's, or if she was competing in a disco contest circa 1977. But as it stands, this is unflattering and just too much white.

Here is a much more appealing look. It adds up to $90.18.

The Savvy Stylist: New Year's Eve in Vegas

Reader Request

I’m going to be in Vegas for New Year’s Eve and I’m totally lost as to what to wear. I’m 5’7” and weigh about 140 lbs. I’m also quite “top heavy” (empire waists are definitely not my friend). I’m a total girly girl with a penchant for shoes (i.e. adorable shoes are a must). I prefer heels but I’m open to alternatives. I’ll be outside on the Strip for most of the evening which means that the weather will be a little chilly (I’m guessing 30-40ish degrees outside at night). It’s New Year’s Eve so I want to look fabulous. Any suggestions? Thanks for your help!

This outfit is perfect for the glitz and glamour of a New Year's Eve in Las Vegas, but the opaque tights and the sleeves on the dress will keep you warm. The whole look costs $99.08.

Random Reader Request: Brown Cardigans

I have been searching all day, through the mall and online and haven't been able to find a single brown cardigan with long sleeves. None of this 3/4 length stuff because I swear those 2 extra inches do keep me warmer. I'm looking for something basic, a simple button-down cardigan. Can you help?

Here are a few cardigans that I hope you like (and by the way, the sleeves on the J. Crew cardigan are long, I promise - the model just has them pushed up).

5 Under $50: Star Struck

I love the use of stars in fashion; they're so whimsical, playful and adorable. Here are five frugal starstruck pieces.

Fashion Redemption: Jennifer Lopez

Okay, I'll give her some credit: J-Lo kind of rocks this sparkly pleated jumpsuit. But it is still a sparkly pleated jumpsuit, and that is all kinds of wrong.

Here is a much more flattering outfit. It costs $94.65.

The Savvy Stylist: Red Uggs

Reader Request

I just got these Ugg Boots in red for my birthday. I want a great outfit to wear with them. Any ideas?

This look will take you from fall to winter, and, not including the boots, it costs $94.08.

5 Under $50: Bronze

In the Olympics, bronze comes after gold and silver, but in fashion, it holds its own with the other metallics. It's a sexy, earthy color and looks amazing on most skin tones.

Here are five affordable and adorable bronze items.

Fashion Redemption: Taylor Momsen

I've said it before and I'll say it again: where the Sam Hill is Taylor Momsen's mother?

Here is a much more appropriate look for young Taylor, for a grand total of $92.09.

The Savvy Stylist: Tiki Bar Birthday Party

Reader Request

I'm planning my 24th birthday party and need help with an outfit. I'm having the party at a popular tiki bar. It's very lively and festive with flowers, fire drinks, BBQ, and limbo lines. It's important that I look the "tropical island" part, and also look sexy. I live near San Fransisco, and the party is the first week of November, so it will probably be chilly, but the party is indoors where I know it will be very warm. I am plus sized (size 20). I'd like a dress and I'd adore a hot pair of heels. Do you have any ideas?

This look is tropical, sexy and festive. Best of all, it comes in at just $88.57.

Random Reader Request: Magazine Advertisement

I was browsing through Marie Claire magazine and saw this advertisement for Walgreens beauty. I fell in love with the outfit the model is wearing in the ad. I was hoping you could help recreate it.

Well, I searched and searched, but I couldn't find anything that was really similar to that beautiful skirt. But I did find a striped skirt in the same colors. This look costs $83.98.

5 Under $50: Tiered Skirts

Tiered skirts are so flirty and cute, but versatile as well. They can be worn with a skimpy tank top , a fitted blazer, or a simple tee. You can rock them with flat sandals, stiletto pumps, or slouchy boots.

Here are a few of my frugal favorites, all under $50:

Fashion Redemption: Ke$ha

I don't know what's worse here: the fact that Ke$ha's dress looks like a trash bag, or the fact that her über-fake hair looks like something I used to climb in gym class.

Well, I can't do anything about the hair, but I can fix the outfit. This updated look costs $88.25.

Ashley Tisdale's Style for $87.20

24 September 2010

Fashion Redemption: Leighton Meester

I don't mean to keep picking on dear Leighton, but she's not making it very easy. I think I wore this exact outfit back in 1992.

Here is a more modern and updated look, for only $99.49.

The Savvy Stylist: Wedding Bonfire

Reader Request

I'm headed out to the Adirondacks at the beginning of October for a wedding, and the night before the ceremony, the bride and groom are having a lakeside bonfire. Since it will be outdoors, I'm looking for a casual, stylish outfit that will also be warm enough for the crisp weather. I recently bought these black boots, and was thinking about wearing them. I'm in my early 30s, 5'7" tall and weigh around 120-125. I tend to wear mostly black, gray, blue, and purple clothing, and draw a lot of style inspiration from celebs like Rachel Bilson, Drew Barrymore, Ginnifer Goodwin, and Carey Mulligan. Can you help? Thank you!

This outfit should keep you nice and warm, but it's still chic and stylish. Not including the boots you already own, it costs $99.28.

Claudia Schiffer's Style for $96.23

5 Under $50: Red Hot

Red is a color to wear if you want to be noticed, and there is a shade of it for everyone. Here are some of my favorite and affordable but incredibly sexy red items.

5 Under $50: Kelsey from Minted Life's picks

Today's guest post is brought to you by the lovely Kelsey of Minted Life. Check out her fabulous fall transition items:

It's finally autumn, which to me means fall clothes, jackets and closed-toe shoes. But, if you live anywhere like I do (Austin), it's still pretty warm, so you need pieces that you can layer to carry you through the season. I love dresses for fall because you can just add a pair of tights or some boots and you're instantly transformed into fall. I also love solid colors especially when there is something interesting about them (like a ruffle) because they're easy to mix and match and you can add a pop of color with your shoes!

23 September 2010

Fashion Redemption: Kylie Minogue

I can see how Kylie was trying to look luxurious and edgy - instead she just looks like she needs her chest waxed SO BADLY. Here is a much less furry look. It costs just $98.79.

The Savvy Stylist: Surprise Party

Reader Request

My husband is turning 30 next month and I'm throwing him a surprise party at our home. I'm having a hard time trying to figure out what to wear because I want to look really nice, but not overdressed, and I need to be fairly comfy since I'll probably be running around making sure that there is enough food and drink. I really like blues and greens, and I'm hoping to wear a dress. Do you have any ideas? Oh, and since I'll be at home, you don't need to include a handbag!

I hope that this outfit will meet all of your needs. It costs $91.91.

Fashion Redemption: Winona Ryder

So, here's the thing: I wanted to be Winona Ryder when I was in high school, and I still secretly adore her and hope that she has a Jason Bateman-esque comeback. Anyone who was in such awesome movies as Heathers, Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands can almost get a free pass from me. I can forgive her some crappy movies, shoplifting and prescription drug abuse, but I don't think I can forgive this outfit.

Here's a look that is still menswear inspired, but much more feminine and flattering, for just $93.50.

The Savvy Stylist: Rodeo Bound

Reader Request

Anyway, I'm in need of some styling help for this weekend. FINALLY this guy I'm been hanging out with for awhile officially asked me out... to watch his friend ride a bull in the rodeo (!). Unsurprisingly, I have no idea what to wear. I want to look appropriate for the event, without going over the top with the cowgirl theme. It should also be something cute to impress my date, PLUS this is the first time I'm meeting his best friend so I need to dress to impress (if the friends give you the nod, you're in!). I am 5'4" and petite, with long dark hair, pale skin, and blue eyes. Any ideas?

This outfit is perfectly rodeo-appropriate, but you won't look like you're wearing a cowgirl costume. It costs $95.23.

5 Under $50: Celebrity Styles

Eva Mendes' Style for $91.99

21 September 2010

Fashion Redemption: Milla Jovovich

I usually like Milla's edgy, offbeat style, and actually, this outfit isn't too bad. If the top was less baggy and unflattering, I might sort of like the whole deal. Here is a slightly more flattering look for just $95.68.

The Savvy Stylist: Seattle Sightseeing

Reader Request

I will be visiting some girl friends in Seattle in October. I'll probably be doing a lot of sightseeing and just hanging out. I am 5’8” and weigh 150lbs. Since it is going to be cool, I would prefer to wear jeans. Could you please put together an outfit for me? I admire Jennifer Aniston’s style a lot, so something Aniston-inspired would be perfect!

This look would be right up Jen's alley, and it costs just $99.30.

5 Under $50: Cozy Capes

We've undergone a redesign and are still working out some of the kinks. Please bear with us!

Fashon Redemption: Britney Spears

Poor Britney. She's obviously so worried about the state of her raggedy hair extensions that she forgot to put on pants. Here's a much more daytime-appropriate look. It costs $97.09.

The Savvy Stylist: Wedding Rehearsal

Reader Request

My wedding is in November and I am looking for a white dress to wear to my rehearsal dinner. The dinner is at 6 and it will be held outside. It will be in November. It wont be too cold yet but I would definitely like something with sleeves. I am very girly and love all stuff fun and lacy. Any ideas?

This outfit is girly, lacy and romantic. Best of all, it costs only $94.91.

Fashion Redemption: Leighton Meester

Leighton Meester is such a pretty girl, so why does she often try to hide behind "edgy" looks that are most often just ugly? This bondage-queen-meets-majorette look does nothing for her!

Here is a much more appropriate look for $94.16.
